Parents’ Motivation to Preserve their Child’s Health: Sociological Analysis

In order to study the possibilities of family influence on child health, to characterize the motivation to preserve it among parents of Belarusian 10-14-year-old adolescents, we analyzed publications and open access Internet sources РИНЦ, Springer, WHO Internet portal, as well as the materials of a survey of 1230 respondents raising 10-14-year-old children (the sample is territorially representative for the Republic of Belarus), using descriptive and non-parametric statistics. It was found that family factors retain leading positions in the formation of adolescent health, regardless of national specifics. The motivation to preserve their child’s health among parents raising 10-14-year-old children living in Belarus, as well as the responsibility for its preservation and strengthening, has been sufficiently formed. Along with a certain distrust and insufficient understanding of the state contribution to the activities aimed at improving the health of adolescents, such formed personal responsibility indicates the need for interaction between the state authorities and families at the practical level, the level of local communities and schools, and the importance of greater popularization of the actions of the legislative and executive authorities, which are already being objectively implemented in this direction. The risk of a dependent position with shifting responsibility ‘on the shoulders’ of the state is relatively low — no more than 25% of families need additional control and, possibly, social and psychological support.

«Black-Market Body-Mods»: Socio-economic Background of a Shadow Segment of the Beauty Industry on the Example of Aesthetic Body Modification Procedures in Modern Russia

The modern beauty industry is a multifaceted and rapidly evolving field that encompasses a diverse range of cosmetic and aesthetic services. Focusing on invasive and high-risk beauty procedures such as aesthetic body modifications (tattooing and piercing), this study examines the underlying motivations for consumers to engage in shadow sector beauty services and the mechanisms of consumer risk management in conditions of elevated medical risks. Based on semi-structured interviews with 17 adult consumers of tattooing and piercing services from the informal sector, the following socio-economic motivations for preferring unlicensed practitioners were identified: cost-savings, low levels of trust in the salon industry, elements of experience economy, a desire for private and ritualistic atmosphere, prioritization of artistic taste and expertise over potential risks, and perceiving medicalized risks as minimal. Consumers fear coercive risks and aesthetic expenses. Three typical scenarios of involvement in the shadow sector of body modification services include searching for a practitioner through personal networks, searching for a master on specialized platforms, and consuming body modification services in a third place. In all cases, the role of a mediator is crucial in initiating the first contact between the client and the practitioner. The reciprocal economy of body modifications performs multiple functions, including social inclusion into specific groups. The primary subjective motivations of the home economy of body modifications are cost savings and recreational activity.

The Museum Space as a Medium in Interaction of Public with Memory: The Analysis of Visitors’ Behavior of the Exhibition “Soviet Era” in the Museum of Political History of Russia

The article is devoted to the study of the perception of museum expositions about the Soviet era by visitors of different age groups. Based on the case study of the exhibition “The Soviet Era” at the Museum of Political History of Russia in St. Petersburg, a frame analysis was conducted that considers the museum space as a social context in which visitors exhibit various behaviors. For this purpose, methods of visual analysis of the museum space, content analysis of the narratives of the exposition and structured observation of the behavior of visitors were used. The study revealed that younger age groups (under 40 years old) perceive exposure without emotional involvement, unlike older ones, who interpret events through the prism of personal experience. Discrepancies were also found between the narratives embedded in the exposition and their perception by visitors, which is due to the attentiveness and route of viewing the exposition.
